Do you want your Mac to run faster? Well, just like all computing systems, the Mac too can face speed issues due to various reasons. No doubt, macOS is one brilliant example of how a computer operating system should perform, but, over years of usage, Macs are bound to slow down in performance. However, you can speed up your MacBook or iMac device by changing and reorganizing certain settings within macOS.
Ways to Speed Up MacBooks and Other Mac Devices
Apple’s Mac devices are pioneering when it comes to performance and reliability. The recently launched inherent processors by Apple, the M1 and the M1 Pro and Max, are giving sleepless nights to its competitors. Earlier, all Macs came with Intel processors. Sure, Macs are reliable but they can also face performance issues. Here are certain ways to speed up your MacBook, iMac, or Mac mini device.
- Uninstall Unnecessary Apps
Apps use up valuable storage on a device. The application itself utilises space on a Mac’s hard drive or SSD. Similarly, cached files from within the application also use storage space. Moreover, when a lot of the data accumulates, it can hamper the performance of your computer. So, it’s best to delete or uninstall apps that you no longer use.
To delete an application, Click the Apple logo > About This Mac > Storage > Manage > Applications > Select the app that you no longer use > Hit Delete at the bottom to remove it.
- Remove Startup Programs
Some users might find that their Mac is taking a lot of time rebooting. The issue could be due to applications that are set to start as soon as you turn on your Mac. With macOS, you can restrict the applications to launch while rebooting and speed up the whole process. Head to System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items > Select the app that you no longer want to open while restarting the device > Click the minus sign to remove.
- Limit Visual Effects
Visual effects use RAM and CPU power to show various transitions. Apple has given the macOS a few visual effects while performing certain tasks. Still, if you feel that you need to speed up your MacBook, try limiting the visual effects. Head to System Preferences > Dock and Menu Bar > Next to the Minimise Window Using menu, select the Scale Effect option in place of the Genie Effect.
Similarly, uncheck next to the Automatically hide and show the menu bar options. You may also want to minimise magnification for the application dock.
Finally, check for operating system updates, running the latest version of macOS will help you overcome performance issues and speed up your MacBook or other Mac devices.
