Blackheads is a very common skin issue that affects the skin on your neck, face, back, and chest. There are various reasons that can cause blackheads including irritation in the hair follicle and oil present on your skin. Adolescents are affected mostly by blackheads, but it can happen at any age.

Blackhead is a type of acne (acne vulgaris). The open pores in the skin, which gets filled with dead skin and excess oil present in the skin are blackheads. It appears as a bump filled with dirt, but the irregular light reflection of follicles that are clogged causes dark spots. Blackheads are not pimples.

Who is most likely to be affected by blackheads?

Teenagers and young adults are typically affected by blackheads due to hormonal changes. Many adults continue to have acne at the age of 20s, 30s, and even the elderly. Some adults can even develop blackheads.

Is this condition common?

It is quite common to have blackheads. There is some research done that suggests blackheads have been affected by every single person. It is most common among adolescents, but 10% to 20% of adults too have blackhead issues.

The common symptoms of blackheads?

Blackheads are not as harsh as acne is said to be. The main character of the blackhead is dark, open pores that are present on the skin. They are not painful nor do they feel uncomfortable like pimples and whiteheads do.

The reason to have blackheads:

Sebaceous glands are present in every part of the body, and most of them are connected to the hair follicles. Whiteheads and blackheads are comedones (singular comedo). Whiteheads are closed comedones whereas blackheads are open comedones. Comedones start when the hair follicles/sebaceous gland becomes inflamed.

The result of the following reasons can occur inflammation:

  • The increased amount of sebum production (sebum is the oily material produced by the sebaceous gland)
  • The formation of keratin is abnormal (the protein which helps your skin, hair, and nail).
  • Increased hormones. (androgen)
  • Increase in the presence of bacteria on the skin, which can cause acne.

Blackheads are not contagious. Blackheads won’t spread to others through skin-to-skin contact.  There are many ways to get rid of blackheads. You can either try home remedies or a dermatologist-proven product that can also work well. It is a little difficult, but not impossible if your hormonal changes are normal.

You can try things that can help like:

  • Cleanse your face well with warm water and a mild face wash.
  • Use a moisturizer daily.
  • Use non-comedogenic products and make sure you remove all the products from your face.
  • Avoid touching your face a lot.

Try and keep your skin dry and clean to avoid skin issues. Keep the skin hydrated all the time and have lots of water to make them healthy, fresh, and beautiful.
