Millions of foreign tourists receive Indian visas every year. In 2019, there were 10.89 million foreign tourists visiting India, an increase of 3.1% from 2018. International visitors must possess passports, and the visa process resembles that of many other countries.

Here’s how you can check your visa status online once you have applied for your Indian visa:
The Indian Visa Online website allows you to check the status of your visa.
If you are applying regularly,
- The Indian Mission will issue you a receipt after you have submitted your application with your application ID.
- Your passport number should be entered here.
- On the screen, enter the captcha
- Check the status by clicking ‘Check Status’.
- Your application status can be viewed here.
In order to apply for an e-visa,
- Please enter your application ID, which can be found in the letter of acknowledgment or printed on the application form.
- Please enter your birthdate.
- Your nationality is required.
- On the screen, enter the captcha.
- Choosing the ‘Advanced search for e-Visa only’ option.

Which types of visas are available for Indian citizens?
India Visa Online for tourists
Tourist visas are valid for 180 days and allow multiple entries. A tourist visa cannot be extended. Proof of a return ticket and a sufficient amount of money to cover your stay are required.
Visa for transit only
Transit visas are valid for 15 days. They are not extendible. You must have a ticket for your onward travel.
Business Visas
It is multi-entry visas and are valid for five years at the most. It is also possible to extend a business visa. The company will need to provide a letter of authorization from you as proof of the company’s bonafide purpose.
Visas for work
Employment visas are multiple entry visas granted to employees or interns employed by Indian companies. They are also granted to those doing voluntary work with NGOs. Experts visiting India for a bilateral agreement with the Indian government can be granted an employment visa for a maximum of five years.
The maximum period of employment visas that can be issued to highly skilled IT employees is three years.
There is a two-year maximum period for other cases or until the end of the contract. An extension is possible. Employee documentation is required.
Student Visas
Student visas are multiple entry visas (3 entries per academic year) that can be extended. The certificate is valid for five years or for the duration of the course, whichever is shorter. In addition to proof of admission, guardians or parents need to provide a letter of support and a bank guarantee letter proving financial capability.
