Analog Games
Board games, card games, dice games, and miniatures games are all examples of analog games. Analog games are great because they can be played anywhere with anyone. They’re perfect for when you want to unplug from technology and connect with people face-to-face. Plus, they’re a lot of fun! Here are eight analog games from around the world that you should check out -Farkle: Popular in North America, Farkle is a very addictive dice game that is simple enough for kids to play but challenging enough for adults too. The goal is to roll your 6 die as many times as possible and try not to have them land on doubles. Once you stop rolling, each set of two numbers in the result must be marked off in order from left to right starting with any pair of numbers (1+6 would go under 1). If at any point during your turn, you roll two sets of doubles, then those must also be marked off. At the end of your turn if there were any spots left blank then those numbers get added back into play. Players keep going until someone has gone through all six rolls without rolling doubles or until someone has rolled so many doubles that it’s impossible to continue playing. That person wins the round and gets a certain number of points based on how much was covered up by their final roll. The winner gets ten points plus one point for every number they uncovered while playing while the loser just gets 10 points minus one point for every number they uncovered while playing.
You can pick up a set of six Farkle dice pretty much anywhere these days, but did you know that these originated in France? A small French town called La Chapelle-en-Serval claims to be the birthplace of this fast paced game which makes sense considering how competitively driven it is!

One of my favorite aspects of board gaming is learning more about other countries and cultures in an enjoyable, non-lecture style manner. It’s often harder than it sounds to find games produced in different countries so I’ve put together an infographic with 8 great examples from all over the world: Canada, China, Poland, Singapore, Germany, Korea, Switzerland & Japan!
For each game I’ve included what type of game it is (e.g., educational), how many players it supports (both number & minimum age), how long it takes to play & what its themes or inspirations are as well as where you can purchase/see a copy of your own! These descriptions come direct from publishers/designers so please let me know if any need updates 🙂 The last column tells you where you can see some gameplay videos for each game to get a sense of how they might play. Hope this inspires you to give one of these games a try – they’re all awesome in their own ways!
