Wheezing is the rattling and shrill sound that you get in your breath due to partial blockage of airways. It is possible to hear some wheezes using a stethoscope. Most often, you can hear it without a stethoscope. It becomes clear when you exhale.

But you can also hear it during inhalation. The tone of wheezing can be different in people. It depends on which part of your respiratory system has become narrowed or blocked. If any part of your upper respiratory system is damaged, you may get a hoarse wheeze.

In case of low obstruction, you will hear a more tone of music similar to a wind instrument for example clarinet. Anyone can get the problem of wheezing from infants to early adults. Often, children who have asthma get this issue. The problem of wheezing is common in many infants.

Approximately, 25 to 30% of infants get the issues of wheezing during the first year of life according to a report. Due to smaller airways, the problem of wheezing may be common in babies. Children under the age of two are vulnerable to a common condition known as bronchiolitis.

  • Cystic Fibrosis: Thick mucus can cause issues of breathing if you have CF. It can also lead to the problem of wheezing.
  • Pneumonia: It refers to lung inflammation that can usually be caused by a bacteria or virus.
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus: It refers to a seasonal lung infection that can cause the problem of pneumonia or bronchiolitis.
  • Aspirating: If a foreign object stocks into the area of your lungs, it can cause wheezing.


Wheezing treatment is associated with its cause. If you have a severe issue of wheezing that interferes with your breathing, you require hospitalisation to improve its symptoms.


Your doctor will prescribe you an inhaler in order to decrease inflammation in the cause of wheezing is asthma. Inhaler helps to open airways. Your doctor can suggest certain pills like montelukast to reduce inflammation and treat asthma.


If your doctor has identified that bronchitis is the cause of wheezing, he may give you a bronchodilator like albuterol in order to control it. He may also give you antibiotics to help you in healing from the infection of bacteria. It helps you to breathe better with recovery.

Other wheezing causes may require certain treatments. The doctor gives you a proper plan to manage the symptoms of an underlying condition.

Breathing Exercises

It is good to drink hot herbal tea in case you are suffering from asthma or wheezing symptoms. Moisture and warmth of tea help you to relax the area of your bronchial tubes. Some studies recommended green tea to get antibacterial properties.
