Winds of Winter Release Date Update

The book is scheduled for release in 2021, but the exact date has not been determined yet. The latest update regarding the Winds of Winter release date appeared on GRRM’s blog on July 16, 2021, where he shared his experience of the trip he took. After that, he paraphrased a well-known poem by Robert Frost as follows: ‘The woods were lovely, dark, and deep, but I’ve got promises to keep, and books to finish before I go to sleep.’

The message may be a hint from GRRM to his fans regarding the upcoming book. He might be telling them that, despite enjoying his vacation, he still has a lot of promises to fulfill before he can rest. George Martin commented last month that he hoped the books could keep up with Game of Thrones and was also excited about HBO’s plans to prepare exclusive original content with him.

Apart from a small hint, George actually gave a more detailed update in April of 2021 regarding the Winds of Winter release date. In that post, he said he wouldn’t be able to finish the book until later. He said in the article that he was currently behind, and the prospect of trying to catch up is very daunting.

The writer was unable to concentrate because of the pandemic because it has been a difficult time for everyone, and it is hard for creators to let their imagination run wild in a time like this. In 2019, he explicitly gave his fans permission to lock him up in a cabin in White Island if he doesn’t finish The Winds of Winter by July 2020, by the time of WordCon. Happy to report, they didn’t follow through on that threat.

During the summer of 2020, George was working primarily on characters like the Lannister siblings Cersei and Tyrion, Ser Barristan Selmy, Asha Greyjoy, Arya Stark, and Areo Hotah, the captain of the Martell guard. Although this was more than a year ago, we can assume he was able to complete development on the characters and move on to other characters and instances.
